Dochula Pass is on the way to Punakha from Thimpu. Its located about 30 kms from Thimpu and the drive itself is an experience.
Dochula offers tourists a panaromic view of the Himalayas and also of the Punakha valley on a clear day. But what catches ones eye as soon as we reach this area are the 108 stupas called the Druk Wangyal Chortens- built by the eldest Queen Mother Her Majesty Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuk. These chortens were built as a tribute to the king for his selfless service to the nation and its people. The chortens are surrounded by lush greenery and a number of prayer flags that add to the aura of the place.
This place is thronged by both locals and tourists. During most days one can find locals who come here to pray and circumambulate the 108 stupas a minimum of 3 times in order to ward of f evil spirits and also to protect their families.
There is also a famous temple opposite the stupas.
